Close to retirement

Choices for your new pension

Are you counting down the days until you can stop working? Or are you not thinking about stopping at all? Your pension is getting a little closer anyway. That is why it is good to know which choices you have.

Choice 1: retire earlier or later

You choose when your pension starts. This can be at the same time as your AOW, earlier or later. Earlier is possible from 10 years before you reach AOW age. Later is possible up to 5 years after your AOW has started. Working fewer hours and partly retiring is also an option.

Choice 2: more pension for you or pension for your partner

You have a pension for yourself and a partner’s pension if you die. You can choose to exchange the partner’s pension for a higher retirement pension for yourself. Your partner must agree.

Choice 3: more pension first, then less (or the other way around)

You can choose to receive a higher pension in the first years and a lower pension later. Or the other way around. Would you prefer the same amount every month? That is also possible.

Lump sum from 2029

From 1 January 2029, you can takeout 10% of your pension in one payment when you retire. If you choose a lump sum, your monthly pension will be lower. A lump sum can affect your benefits and the income tax you pay. Read more about lump sum.

Calculate your pension

You can easily do this with the pension planner at mijnpgbpensioen.nl.

Apply for your pension

About 6 months before your AOW starts, you will receive a letter. This letter explains how to apply for your pension.

Do you want to retire on or after 1 January 2027?

This year, you can only calculate and apply for your pension under the current rules. Later in 2027, you will receive a new calculation of your pension under the new rules.
